Chevrolet Call Me Out

Back in 2017 we at Chevrolet invited 29 young geniuses from 10 different countries to compete in Hack Lab Detroit and come up with a solution for texting and driving. Now in 2018 we’ve brought that winning idea to life, the Call Me Out app..

Campaign Case Study

It takes a vast team to engineer the world class vehicles at Chevrolet. These are the stories of four individuals that use unique methods to solve their challenges and provide all of us with inspiration on how to follow suit.

The Winning Idea

On International Children’s Day, Chevrolet welcomed a group of entrepreneurial teens, ages 13 to 19, from around the world to the Chevrolet Hack Lab in Detroit for a day-long hackathon. In this event, the participants were divided into teams to brainstorm and develop innovative solutions to address distracted driving, with guidance from Chevy mentors. The winning idea, which came from a team with members from Dubai, Canada, and the United States, focused on employing “positive peer pressure” to intercept and deter drivers just as they were about to become distracted. Taking the initiative forward, we partnered with Majestyk to turn this innovative concept from the young minds into a fully functional app.

Making It Real

The notion of using 'positive peer pressure' is certainly a unique insight to drive behavioral change against texting and driving. The challenge was to design the UX of the app to bring this idea to life. Through a process of conceptualizing the functionality in wireframes, we ultimately came up with a design that we felt would create an emotional connection to safe driving while also gamifying the positive behavior change with leaderboards.

How It Works

The Call Me Out app features a behavior-focused UX. Using the cell phone accelerometer, it detects vehicle motion and activates alerts. It emotionally connects drivers by playing loved ones' voices if they pick up the phone post-alert. This positive peer pressure emphasizes the stakes of distracted driving. Additionally, points and leaderboard rankings gamify the experience within groups or the community.
